What to do, what to do ...

Our two little guys are doing well, chugging right along. David had his 3-year-old checkup last week; again it's a relief to be reminded by the pediatrician of exactly how far he's come. He has finally broken 25 lbs; he's about 32" tall. He was over 25 lbs a long while back, then he was sick and vomiting, and he's only now getting back up there. There were no shots at this visit, thank goodness, and we finished up by having lunch with a former colleague and then visiting my last job site to see a couple of other old co-workers. Simon brought home an excellent 3rd-grading-period report card; everything was the same or improved from the last time. Matt in particular was really proud; he made a copy of it to send to his parents. He (Simon) continues to regularly amaze us, most recently me during a phone conversation. I had to go out of town overnight for a family (of origin) issue, and it's probably the best phone conversation I've ever had with him. We didn't talk about anything special, just his day at school and home, but it felt like a much more grown-up conversation, probably owing to the fact that he didn't recount anything having to do with Star Wars/Angry Bird, Ninja Turtles, or one of the various other mass-marketed cartoons he has come to love. And I saw him getting dressed the other day; it was a "free dress" day at his uniform school, I encouraged him to wear jeans and I was shocked when he agreed. He'd usually much rather wear sweatpants or something similar, and watching him suck in his little belly to zip and snap the jeans was just funny. The jeans are a little too long and without his shirt on yet, he looked really tall and grown-up, more like a 7 or 8 year old. "He looked really tall" is not something you are going to hear much in association with Mr. Sy.

We are currently dealing with about one big issue per kid. David's is, please child, eat something while at our house, and for the love of God will you please eat some fresh fruit or veggies. Simon was a breeze in this respect - from the time he started eating real food, he has eaten just about any fresh fruit we put in front of him, and he's pretty good about vegetables too. David is ... more typical, I guess, and there's the phrase you won't hear too often in association with David. I'm assuming this is something we will just get past at some point, but right now it's difficult and frustrating. He will eat bananas and avocado, occasionally some carrots or green beans if they are cooked to suit him. Oh, and corn on the cob. But otherwise, nothing. He has never liked very crunchy stuff, including cookies. So I'm resorting to sneaking them in, which I'm not too crazy about but I'm willing to do right now. Unrelated to produce, he's also refusing most breakfast-y foods, and mornings are hard. But I'm sure he'll get over it. Pretty sure. Simon's issue is related to the aforementioned Star Wars/Angry Birds, etc. He is driving us nuts asking for everything in the world - candy, chocolate milk, stuffed animals, other toys; it's a daily occurrence, and telling him "not today" leads to lots of tears. We've been pretty good about not giving in, but now it's to the point that before we go anywhere, we have to give a little speech about how we don't want him to ask for anything. I'm hoping this is just a stage also, and if we continue to be firm and  encourage him to think about other things it'll pass. For right now, it's killing us.

David's special education teacher (she works with him on Mondays) reported the other day that after he stacked up a whole bunch of blocks, he threw up his arms and said "Good job!" I'm guessing it was more like, good gob, but it's impressive. And yesterday his teacher reported he'd said, "Stop" (well, staaahp) while holding up his hand in a stop gesture. I'm pretty sure he did that a couple of times this morning.

I'm off to help Simon work on his birch tree report, for next week.

So, nothing big, but everything's going pretty well. :)
